Whether you can wear makeup after microneedling depends on the depth of the treatment and the type of makeup you plan to use. Applying makeup too soon increases the risk of contamination, irritation, and clogged micro-channels.
Cosmetic Needling 0.25 to 0.3mm
At this depth, the epidermis is minimally disrupted. Patients can wear mineral makeup after 12 to 24 hours. Avoid liquid foundations and concealers for the first 24 hours because they contain preservatives and emulsifiers that can penetrate the micro-channels and cause reactions.
Medical Grade Needling 0.5 to 1.0mm
Wait a minimum of 48 hours. The epidermis has visible pinpoint bleeding and the barrier function is significantly compromised. Mineral powder is the safest option when you do resume makeup. Clean all brushes and sponges before use to avoid introducing bacteria.
Deep Scar Revision 1.5 to 2.0mm
Wait 72 hours minimum. The micro-channels extend into the reticular dermis and take longer to close. Some patients may need 4 to 5 days before makeup can be applied without irritation. Stick to loose mineral powder during the first week.
How to Remove Makeup Safely
Use a non-foaming cream cleanser and lukewarm water. Do not use makeup wipes or micellar water with a cotton pad because the friction can disrupt the healing epidermis. Pat the skin dry. Do not rub.
